A Personal Note
I have spent 30 years studying the archaeology and history of this fascinating region. Much of my work is dedicated to the memory of the Jemez people who lived, worked, and sometimes died defending these beautiful mesas and canyons. Their ingenuity and bravery allowed them to live well through farming in this spectacular high-altitude setting for 500 years before they lost their freedom in a valiant struggle against an invading force with superior weapons and tactics. True to their resilient nature, though, the Jemez people did not give up or move away. They have survived and now thrive in a different setting at their current village of Walatowa, but they have never forgotten their history and their land.
